Feathers of the Firebird

In 2014 I and many other writers received a lovely and unexpected invitation from prominent American children’s poet Kenn Nesbitt, asking if we would be interested in submitting poems for an anthology he was compiling, One Minute Till Bedtime, which would also include such contributors as Jack Prelutsky, Jon Scieszka, Jane Yolen, and Lemony Snicket. Talk about great company! And I was so thrilled when Kenn accepted my poem, Seagull Beach Party.

Two years later, and this week sees the publication of One Minute Till Bedtime. Containing the work of many poets from the US, UK, Australia and Canada, selected by Kenn, and beautifully illustrated by Christoph Niemann, the book is published by Little, Brown and is available around the world, including Australia. To celebrate its publication, I spoke to Kenn about the project, his own career, and children’s poetry in general.

First of all, congratulations on the publication of One Minute till Bedtime, Kenn! It’s lovely to see it out there. How did you come up with the idea for this uniqu

About Kenn Nesbitt

Several times a day, most days of the week, I receive email from students requesting biographical information for a school paper. I love getting email from kids who enjoy reading my poetry, so feel free to drop me a line and say “hi.” As you can imagine, though, I get a lot of email. So please let me save you a little time by telling you a bit about myself. If you have any questions that aren’t answered below or on the Frequently Asked Questions page, please feel free to contact me. I will be happy to answer any specific questions that are not answered here.

Who I Am

I am 62 years old and I was born on February 20, 1962 in Berkeley, California. I grew up in Fresno and San Diego, California.

I now live in a big old house in Spokane, Washington, with my wife Ann, and our two cats, Thomas and Sancho.

My Poetry

My first children’s poem — Scrawny Tawny Skinner — was written in 1994 after having dinner with a friend whose 4-year-old daughter did everything she could to get out of eating her dinner. S

How did you start writing poetry for children?

I wrote my first children's poem in 1994 just for the fun of it. I enjoyed it enough that I wrote another and another. Writing children's poetry became a hobby that I dabbled in for several years before deciding in 1997 to submit my work to a publisher. The first publisher I sent poems to published several of them in a couple of anthologies in 1998, and eventually published my first book, THE ALIENS HAVE LANDED!, in 2001.

Why funny poetry?

I think that everyone who reads or writes poetry has a preference for what time of poems they enjoy. I happen to enjoy reading humorous poems most of all, and I find them more fun to write than serious verse. In addition, I've discovered that even children who "reluctant readers" tend to enjoy reading funny poems, so I find that my work is able to benefit kids around the world by giving them something fun to read.

Can you tell us about your most recent book, and what other projects you are working on?
