The exhibition Haettenschweiler from A to Z
The monographic exhibition Haettenschweiler from A to Z focuses on his typeface design and commercial graphics, which it comments on with historical and current interviews. Haptic and digital interventions by students of visual communication at the ZHdK invite the public to try out Haettenschweiler’s typefaces for themselves and to question the design and appropriation process from today’s perspective. Meanwhile, an external research team will present the results of an intelligent font recognition tool (Deep Learning) that searches for applications of the Schmalfetten Grotesk in online archives. Meanwhile, narratives by Haettenschweiler’s former apprentices and a film animation bring the designer’s studio to life with its tools, design patterns and sources of inspiration. Haettenschweiler is een schreefloos lettertype gebaseerd op de Duitse variant Schmalfette Grotesk (Duits voor vette, smalle schreefloze letter).
Het is vernoemd naar Walter Haettenschweiler, die samen met Armin Haab het boek Lettera heeft uitgegeven en waarin het lettertype Schmalfette Grotesk is gebruikt.
Haettenschweiler is vaak vergeleken met Helvetica Inserat en Impact. Het heeft smallere tekens dan Impact. De R heeft een gekrulde staart gelijk aan die van de Helvetica familie. Horizontale lijnen zijn minimaal, wat resulteert in een slechte leesbaarheid in kleinere puntgroottes en op afstand. Daarom is de letter absoluut niet geschikt voor grote stukken tekst, maar voor koppen en displays.
Het lettertype wordt geïnstalleerd samen met Microsoft Office producten en is wijdverbreid beschikbaar als shareware.
