Jean-Luc Baker

American ice dancer

Jean-Luc Baker (born October 7, 1993) is a British-American ice dancer. With his skating partner, Kaitlin Hawayek, he is the 2018 Four Continents champion, the 2018 NHK Trophy champion, and a four-time U.S. national bronze medalist (2019–22).

Earlier in their career, he and Hawayek became the 2014 World Junior champions, the 2013 Junior Grand Prix Final silver medalists, and the 2014 U.S. national junior champions.[1]

Personal life

Jean-Luc Baker was born in Burnley, England.[2] He is the son of Sharon Jones Baker, who represented the United Kingdom in ice dancing at the 1988 Winter Olympics, and Stephen Baker, who competed for the U.K. in pair skating at the 1976 World Junior Championships.[3] His first name was inspired by the fictional character Captain Jean-Luc Picard of Star Trek: The Next Generation.[4]

Baker was born with a club foot.[5] When he was four, he moved to the United States with his family. He attended Harbour Pointe Middle School and Kamiak High School in Mu

November 27, 2017, 3:11 PM · I know very little about the violin, but I like Ponty a lot. How does he compare with guys like Jascha Heifetz? As good as Jean-Luc is, I have a feeling that Heifetz could have played his music as a warm-up, and with no effort.

Are they in different leagues?

Edited: November 27, 2017, 6:39 PM · Jean-Luc Ponty is a conservatory-trained classical violinist who was considered a hot prospect in his day (late 1950s). His early work in jazz was pioneering in the sense that he demonstrated a much wider context for the violin than Grappelli ever envisioned. Apart from his injection of the violin into jazz, his influence on jazz as a musical genre is overshadowed by the contributions of others of that era, in my opinion.

I admired JLP as a youngster (and I still do), and I even wrote to him (ca. 40 years ago) to ask for his autographed picture, which he graciously sent bearing the inscription "All my best to Paul." That picture is hanging framed in my studio.
