Budgie were formed in late 1967.[1] The original lineup featured Burke Shelley, Brian Goddard, Tony Bourge and Ray Phillips.[2] By early 1970, Goddard had left the group because, according to Shelley, "he got a girl pregnant and suddenly had to get a job".[3] The remaining trio released Budgie in 1971, Squawk in 1972 and Never Turn Your Back on a Friend in 1973.[4] By the end of 1973, Phillips had left Budgie.[5] He was replaced by Pete Boot, who debuted on In for the Kill! released the following year.[6] After around

Late 1967 in Cardiff, Burke Shelley (bass/lead vocals) met up with Ray Phillips (drums) and guitarist Tony Bourge to form Budgie establishing a substantial following within the South Wales college and club circuit.

After a journalist commented Budgie's sound was more akin to a 'Six Ton' Budgie, their name became as heavyweight as their delivery. In 1971, their first album was blues-oriented hard rock and produced by Rodger Bain, released by MCA. Later records found Budgie gradually moving into a harder and more aggressive sound. The band, usually a classic power trio with the occasional keyboard player, released ten albums, with MCA, A&M, and RCA, between 1971 and 1982, attracting a fair number of fans and achieving modest commercial success.

Budgie were one of the earliest heavy metal bands, and according to Garry Sharpe-Young they were a seminal influence on many acts of that scene,[3] particularly the new wave of British heavy metal, and later acts such as Metallica.[4] The band have been noted as "among the heaviest metal of its day".[1]
