Steven Szabo

Steve Szabo began his career at the center in 1963 as a Centaur Program systems engineer. Over the next 20 years he took on managerial roles of increasing engineering responsibility in the Launch Vehicles Directorate. In 1986 he was tasked with establishing the first Engineering Directorate at the center. His efforts directly improved the engineering capabilities of the center and ensured the success of many lab programs. The center’s most prestigious engineering award is named in his memory as an acknowledgement of his commitment to excellence in engineering.

Over the course of nearly 30 years, Steven Szabo’s career was marked by sustained accomplishments and achievements in engineering, program management and leadership. Friend, role model, and inspiration to many, Szabo’s untimely death of cancer at age 51 was a loss felt deeply at the center.

Szabo began his career at the NASA Lewis Research Center in 1963 after earning his engineering degree from Ohio Northern University. He joined Lewis as a systems engineer in the Centaur Project Office. In just a few years,

Steve Szabo, age 94, of Oshkosh, passed away peacefully with family at his side on July 2, 2021. Steve was born in Franklin, New Jersey, and grew up in Jamesburg, New Jersey. He graduated from Jamesburg High School in 1945, then enlisted in the Army Air Corps at the end of World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He was in the Army Reserves for 28 years and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He attended Rutgers University, Kansas State University, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, ultimately earning his PhD in Agronomy.
He married the love of his life, Gladys Thierer on September 5, 1955, in Madison, Wisconsin. His career as a scientist took Steve and Gladys to New Mexico, Virginia, Maryland, and Monsey, New York. He worked at the Boyce Thompson Institute for plant research in Yonkers, New York for many years. After retirement from his scientific career, he worked various jobs and owned two small businesses. He had many interests and hobbies over the years, including flying small planes, skydiving, singing in the church choir, and especially gardening.

So sorry to hear this sad news. We went on so many trips together. Key West, Isle Royale, Lac Vieux Desert, Boundary Waters, James Bay, Ottawa Forest and Shawnee Forest just to name a few. Wouldn't/couldn't have done it without you.

Steve was a great guy going all the way back to grammar school. He was my masonry guy on my house. Loved his laugh.

Steve and Patty were our next door neighbors on Keeler in Chicago, but they felt more like family. It was always fun to be around them. Steve was always cracking jokes and had a very distinctive, infectious laugh. I know he will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
