James Leonard Hamilton (born August 4, 1948) is an American basketball coach and the current men's basketball head coach at Florida State University. He is a former head coach at Oklahoma State University, the University of Miami and for the National Basketball Association's Washington Wizards. In his 33 years as a collegiate head coach, his teams have qualified for 12 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournaments and 11 National Invitation Tournaments, highlighted by appearances in the NCAA Tournament's Elite Eight (2018) and Sweet 16 (2011, 2019, 2021) with Florida State as well as a Sweet 16 appearance with Miami (2000). Other career benchmarks include the Big East Conference regular season championship in 2000, the ACC tournament title in 2012 and the ACC regular season championship in 2020. While with the Wizards in 2000–01, they posted a 19–63 record.

Leonard Hamilton Biography
Leonard Hamilton played his college basketball at Gaston Community College and the University of Tennessee from 1966 to 1971. After earning his undergraduate degree he turned his focus to coaching and became a member of the Austin Peay coaching staff in 1971. He’d go on to earn a spot on the University of Kentucky coaching staff from 1974 to 1986 and helped the Wildcats to an NCAA Championship in 1978. During that span, he also helped his team to an NCAA runner-up finish in 1975 and a Final Four appearance in 1984.
After the 1986 season, he was hired as the head coach at Oklahoma State University and quickly turned the Cowboys program into a winner, posting consecutive 17-win seasons in 1989 and 1990. As a proven head coach, he was hired on to head up the Miami Hurricanes squad in 1990 and turned their program around as well, leading them to consecutive 15-win seasons in 1995 and 1996, 16 wins in 1997, 18 wins in 199,8 and back-to-back 23-win seasons in 1999 and 2000.

During 40 seasons as a basketball coach on the collegiate level, Leonard Hamilton has established quite a legacy of success. He is known nationwide as a builder of programs.
As a head coach, Leonard has earned three National Coach of the Year awards, two Atlantic Coach Conference Coach of the Year awards, and two Big East Coach of the Year awards. He has coached in seven NCAA Tournaments and has accumulated eight 20 win seasons. Next season, he will top 400 career wins overall and 200 career wins at Florida State.
2012 was his signature season in Tallahassee. Florida State posted a 25-10 overall record, a 12-4 ACC mark and won the ACC Title by knocking off both Duke and North Carolina in the conference tournament.
Before joining the Seminoles in the spring of 2002, Leonard coached 4 years at Oklahoma State, 10 years at Miami FL and was Washington Wizards’ head coach in 2001.
Prior to becoming a head coach, Leonard was regarded as one of the premier recruiters in the country. He spent 12 seasons on the Kentucky staff after beginning his coaching career
