Nathan Nickel, MPH, PhD
Dr. Nickel is an associate professor of community health sciences in the Max Rady College Of Medicine, director of the Manitoba Centre For Health Policy, co-director of the Manitoba Interdisciplinary Lactation Centre, and associate editor of the International Breastfeeding Journal.
As a population health scientist, Dr. Nickel’s work focuses on generating evidence that can inform policy decision making.
He began his research career working with hospitals to implement and evaluate maternity practices to support health and well-being among mothers and their infants. Since then, he has worked with stakeholder groups and community to investigate maternal-child health outcomes associated with social programs as well as the social and structural determinants of health and well-being.
Through his partnerships, he has expanded his focus to examine how substance use and justice involvement intersect with the social and structural determinants and the subsequent impact on well-being.

Kirby Lynn Nickels was born August 23, 1949, in Stillwater, Oklahoma to Mack and Lodiene (Kirby) Nickels (AKA Papa and Nanny). He graduated from Perkins-Tryon in 1967. Then on June 6, 1969, he married Rhonda Longan and to that union they were blessed with their son, Nate. In October of 1969 Kirby made the decision to join the United Sates Navy where he served as a Navy CB in Dong Tam, Vietnam. He received an honorable discharge in 1971.
Kirby was a cabinetmaker by trade. He worked most of his years for Phil Longan Construction. He later worked for Oklahoma State University where he met Mary Ellen Lore. They were married on August ,12 1988. After retirement Kirby devoted his time to serving at the Perkins VFW where he was a Commander. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and camping with his grandchildren.
Kirby passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 29, 2023, at his sons home.
Those left to celebrate his life include his children, Nate Nickels and wife Missy of Stillwater, OK., and Lora McAlister and husband C.A. of Glencoe, OK; grandchildren, Jordain Nickels, Alyssa Paine, J.T.
