Francis Thomas Dean Carrington, (17 November 1843 – 9 October 1918) was a British-born prolific and influential political cartoonist, illustrator and journalist, active in Australia and based in Melbourne from the mid-1860s to his death in 1918.
Carrington was born in London and emigrated to Australia as a young man. As a cartoonist he was most active in the period 1867 to 1887 as the principal artist for Melbourne Punch. His featured illustrations were noteworthy as incisive critiques of the protectionistliberal faction of colonial politicians in their campaigns against their establishment opponents, in line with the conservative political stance of the proprietors of Punch. Biography
Thomas was the son of Bob and Shirley Carrington.
Tom was a smart, energetic person who loved swimming, waterskiing, fishing and working with his dad who was an electrician. A “late bloomer,” Tom had an uncanny ability to make everyone his friend.
Following graduation from Storm Lake High School in June 1966, Tom attended Iowa State University at Ames for two years, studying Electrical Engineering before volunteering for active military service. He received his basic and advanced individual training at Fort Lewis, Washington, and was assigned to the 1st Air Cavalry Division in Vietnam, August, 1968.
Tom was first assigned duty in Quang Tri Province, near the DMZ. Then, the entire Cavalry Division was relocated in an area near the Cambodian Border in Tay Ninh Province. His duty assignment kept Tom in that Province until the forepart of August 1969, when Tom was transferred to Quan Loi to await processing for his return to the States, August 19th. Born at Gwynfryn, Bwlch-gwyn, near Wrexham, Denbighshire, 24 November 1881, the son of John Carrington (a descendant of one of the families that migrated from Cornwall to work in the Denbighshire lead mines) and Winifred (née Roberts), a native of Bryneglwys. He spent his early years at Gwynfryn and was educated at Bwlch-gwyn school. After leaving school he was apprenticed as a printer at Hughes and Son, Wrexham. He married Mildred Mary Jones, Minera, in 1905 and went to live in Coed-poeth where he followed his trade as a printer and as a music publisher.
