Trails of a Wilderness Wanderer: True Stories from the Western Frontier

July 7, 2020
This was a book I'd looked forward to for a while but I was under two misapprehensions: That this was about the Northern Rockies (according to the GoodReads description) as I understand them, ie the Northern Rockies in Canada, and that the book covers Russell's transition from photographer to hunter.

Actually this is the Northern Rockies by American standards and the Southern Rockies by Canadian standards. Darn. And while the book repeatedly mentions that the author's views towards hunting have changed somewhat, this is only really hinted at and the photography isn't covered at all. It's the character arc and changing way of relating to the wild that I was most interested in.

Regardless, while I found the tales enlightening, this isn't really a book I'd highly reccomend. Once I realized it wasn't for me, I skipped some of the middle of the book.

All of the stories are introduced in the exact same way. He says something abstract and then says gee here's a story that illustrates just that point

Description

From his boyhood days through his adulthood as a trapper, guide, naturalist, and outdoorsman, Andy Russell lived a lifestyle that would be nearly impossible today. Growing up in a ranching community in a "land of boots and saddles, guns and fishing rods, and the smell of pines and grass," he observed the ways of animals wild and tame, braved rugged mountaintops and freezing rivers, and forged friendships with the local Indians.

About the author

ANDY RUSSELL was born in 1915 and lived his first years on the Prairies before moving to the Canadian Rockies. A life-long outdoorsman, he had a long and varied career in Alberta, British Columbia, the Yukon and Alaska.
