Russian concert pianist Youri Egorov (1954-88) was a cult hero. Jan Brokken got to know Egorov in the 1970s when he travelled with him for a magazine article that he was to write to a performance in England. Egorov’s playing was out of this world but he was agitated by the orchestra’s indifference: ‘Not one spark of enthusiasm, I can’t stand that.’

BiographyBorn in 1954, pianist Youri Egorov began his piano studies at the age of six at the Music School and Conservatory in Kazan. In 1971 he was a prizewinner in the Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud Competition in Paris, and was admitted to the Moscow Conservatory to study with the late Jacov Zak. In 1974 he was a top prize winner at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, and, in 1975, at the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition in Brussels.Youri Egorov was enormously successful in his New York recital debut at Alice Tully Hall in 1978, and in his Chicago debut the same year. He performed with the Chicago Symphony in 1979, and made a triumphant return to New York in his Carnegie Hall debut that season. Youri Egorov's first visit to the United Kingdom was in October, 1980, when he gave 18 concerts in 13 cities in one month. He made his London debut at that time at the Royal Festival Hall with the Scottish National Orchestra, and his London recital debut at Queen Elizabeth Hall.
