Award winning author Han Nolan is joining us here at Ready Chapter 1 today to discuss some of her best novel writing tips and tricks, as well as her new novel, Running Past Dark!
Hi! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your new novel, Running Past Dark?
Hi. Thanks for asking. I’ve been writing since I was a little kid but only started trying to get published after my husband and I adopted three children at one time and I needed to stay home to take care of them, writing only when they were in school.
I’ve written ten young adult novels, including the National Book Award winning book Dancing on the Edge. Other awards and honors include, National Book Award finalist, People’s choice award, New York Public Library best books for YA, ALA best books, Library guild Best books, and Alabama Library Assoc. best YA novel of the year.
My novel Crazy was performed at the Kennedy Center under the title of Jason Invisible. My books have also been translated into several languages. My latest novel is a mystery titled Running Pa National Book Award Winner What happens to the twin left behind? Scottie O'Doul isn't looking forward to starting her senior year. Last May, her identical twin sister, Cait, died in a car crash involving the school's beloved football coach. There's been no official report on the accident yet, but before she died, Cait told Scottie a disturbing secret. When Scottie reveals this secret, half the town turns against her, certain that Scottie is lying to protect her sister and that Cait deliberately lost control of the car. Scottie knows her twin would never take her own life, or someone else's, but how can she prove it? As she faces bullying and hostility at school, she starts to wonder if what Cait said was even true. Turning to running to break through her grief, Scottie finds a new world and a new sense of self outside her twinness. She also reconnects with her old boyfriend, who had a terrible accident of his own the same day Cait died. Could there be a connection? As s I was born in Birmingham, Alabama. My family called me "Hoot" back then because that and my big eyes made me look like an owl. I couldn't pronounce my first and middle names, which were Helen Harris, so I said "Hannah Hollis". My family shortened this to a variety of nicknames: Hahn, Han Holl, Han, Hannie, and Hannie Bucket, which my husband later shortened to Hannie B. The neighborhood kids also called me Hahn. It is now pronounced, Han, and it rhymes with man. I was very active as a child--I loved to jump on beds, do somersaults, handstands and flips on and off of sofas, climb trees and do different tricks on the monkey bars at the playground. I also liked my own thoughts best. In kindergarten, I paid no attention to my teacher. She told my mother that she thought I had a hearing problem. My parents had my hearing tested. My ears were fine. When my mother told me what the teacher had sai
