Dr. Göran Carstedt

Dr. Göran Carstedt is chairman of The Natural Step International, a non-profit organization with a scientific approach to sustainable development. Dr. Carstedt joined the Clinton Climate Initiative in January 2007 as Senior Director of the C40 initiative and is engaged in the formation of the Society for Organizational Learning (SOL) Global Network.
Dr. Carstedt is also an advisor and coach to various European, US and Asian organizations and serves as chairman and board member for several corporations. He is the former head of IKEA Retail Europe and served as a member of the IKEA Group Management Board from 1990-1997 and as President of IKEA North America from 1990-1995.
Before joining IKEA, Dr. Carstedt served for many years in different executive positions with Volvo. He joined Volvo in 1974 as Manager of Market Planning at the Car Division in Gothenburg, Sweden. A New Approach to Economic Development
Abstract
From the point of view of institutional economics, growth is related to the implementation and enforcement of property rights. The system that emits, and enforces those rights needs to have very low transactions costs leading to the least possible frictions. The lowest the transactions costs the highest the level of security of investment, as well as the benefits of direct and indirect socioeconomic impacts. However, traditional economic development models do not focus on transactions costs and property rights systems, both of which seem to be the suspects for low productivity, slow growth, and informality. Many developing countries suffer from systems of property rights that are unpredictable because they are inundated with overwhelming bureaucracy, difficult to follow, track, and measure. The speaker has developed a methodology to best diagnose the reasons why a country has such high transactions costs and how to reduce them systematically. Elena Panaritis (Greek: Έλενα Παναρίτη) is an economist, social entrepreneur, and former politician known for her work in institutional economics and property rights reform. She was a member of the Greek Parliament and held advisory roles at the World Bank, where she developed models to integrate informal economies into the formal market, notably in Peru. As the founder of Thought for Action (T4Action), Panaritis advocates for policies that foster economic inclusion and institutional transparency in developing and distressed economies.

Elena Panaritis was born in Athens, Greece.[1] She studied Economics at the American College of Greece, graduating with a BA in 1989, and went on to the University of BolognaItaly, to get her Master's in International Economics, in 1990.
