Sir Humphrey Gilbert (c. 1539 – 9 September 1583) was an English adventurer, explorer, member of parliament and soldier who served during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and was a pioneer of the English colonial empire in North America and the Plantations of Ireland.[1][2] He was a maternal half-brother of Sir Walter Raleigh and a cousin of Sir Richard Grenville.[2]

Gilbert was the 5th son of Otho Gilbert of Compton, Greenway and Galmpton, all in Devon, by his wife Catherine Champernowne. His brothers, Sir John Gilbert and Adrian Gilbert, and his half-brothersCarew Raleigh and Sir Walter Raleigh, were also prominent during the reigns of Queen Elizabeth I and King James VI and I. Sir Humphrey Gilbert was an English adventurer who gained some measure of fame, by attempting to claim lands in Newfoundland for England. He was the half-brother of Sir Walter Raleigh, and at least peripherally involved in several failed expeditions and adventures. Like his brother Raleigh, he started his career as a soldier in Ireland. He made a name for himself by successfully subduing some Irish clans using exceedingly brutal tactics, which he insisted were necessary to quell the rebellion. Most of the adventures in his life, right up until his death at sea, were marked by a considerable degree of recklessness, so such sentiments are not wholly out of character.

Sir Humphrey Gilbert (1537-1583) was an English adventurer, explorer, politician, and soldier that lived during the 16th century Tudor era. During his life he became well known noble of English crown, and as a half-brother to the famous Sir Walter Raleigh he also forged his reputation as a pioneer of English colonization in North America.

Humphrey Gilbert was born in Devon, as a fifteenth son of Otho and Katherine Champernowne Gilbert. After he finished his naval and military education at the University of Oxford, he joined the fight against Irish rebellion led by Shane O'Neill, but he soon found himself in the London, where he remained close to the English crown.

After the end of the rebellion, he was appointed to the office of Ulster and as a member of the Irish parliament. During his stay there, he fought many battles against rebellious Irish.
