Christopher J. Koch

Brief Biography

Christopher Koch was born in Hobart, Tasmania, in 1932 though he now lives in Sydney. He worked as a radio producer for the Australian Broadcasting Commission for more than ten years before leaving that position in 1972 to write full-time.

Christopher Koch has won the Miles Franklin Award on two occasions: in 1985 for The Doubleman and in 1996 for Highways to a War. His novel The Year of Living Dangerously won The Age Book of the Year Award and was successfully filmed.

Film Adaptations
The Year of Living Dangerously was filmed by Peter Weir in 1983 (from a screenplay by Christopher Koch, Peter Weir and David Williamson) and featured Mel Gibson, Sigourney Weaver and Linda Hunt, who won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Billy Kwan.

Christopher John KochAO (16 July 1932 – 23 September 2013) was an Australian novelist, known for his 1978 novel The Year of Living Dangerously, which was adapted into an Academy Award-winningfilm by the same name for which he co-wrote the screenplay. He twice won the Miles Franklin Award (for The Doubleman in 1985 and Highways to a War in 1996). In 1995, he was made an Officer of the Order of Australia for his contribution to Australian literature, and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters from his alma mater, the University of Tasmania, in 1990.

Early life and education

Koch was born in Hobart, Tasmania, in 1932. He was educated at Clemes College, St Virgil's College, and Hobart High School and later attended the University of Tasmania.[1] Koch's admission to the university was controversial, with the professorial board refusing to admit him as he had not matriculated with a mathematics subject—however this refusal
